When an Attic Turns Into Something Much Bigger
There are some attic jobs you forget pretty quickly.
Then there are the ones that stick with you because of what the homeowner has been living with before you ever arrive.
This job in Highland Village was one of those.
Ready to start your insulation project?
This wasn’t about comfort anymore
Most of the calls we get start the same way.
A room is too hot. Energy bills are climbing. Maybe the upstairs never seems to cool off.
When Erica called, I assumed it would be something along those lines.
I was wrong.
Once we got into the attic, it became clear this wasn’t really an insulation problem anymore. It had turned into a health concern for the family.
The attic told the whole story
You could see signs of rodent activity almost everywhere.
Droppings throughout the attic. Old nesting material. Areas where rats had clearly been traveling for a long time. Dead rodents had even been found in the space.
The old insulation had absorbed years of contamination.
And honestly, the smell told part of the story before we even got very far into the inspection.
Not great.
Erica said something that a lot of homeowners say during situations like this.
“I just want to know the air in my house is clean.”
Fair question.
What surprised me a little
Sometimes homeowners think the attic is completely separate from the rest of the house.
It feels that way.
But after looking at enough homes around Highland Village, Flower Mound, and Lewisville, you start noticing how connected everything really is. Small openings around wiring. Plumbing penetrations.
Recessed lights. Tiny gaps that seem insignificant.
Then you realize attic air has more pathways into the home than most people expect.
That part mattered.
The insulation wasn’t the only problem
The insulation had to come out. There really wasn’t another option.
But removing insulation alone wouldn’t have solved everything.
Evidence of rodent activity had spread throughout the attic. Around framing. Near penetrations. Along the attic floor. In corners most people never see.
Kind of like cleaning up a flooded room but leaving the water hidden behind the walls.
The source might be gone.
The mess isn’t.
And then we got to work
First, our crew removed all of the contaminated insulation.
Then we spent time vacuuming the entire attic using industrial equipment designed to remove the remaining debris and visible contamination throughout the space.
Droppings.
Nesting material.
Dust.
Debris.
A lot of it.
The attic looked completely different by the time we finished the cleanup phase.
A quick side note
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that homeowners almost always relax a little once the attic is empty.
Not because the project is done.
Because they can finally see what’s up there.
It sounds simple, but sometimes seeing a clean attic floor for the first time in years gives people peace of mind.
I’ve seen that reaction more than once.
The final step made a big difference
After the cleanup was completed, we disinfected the affected areas and started air sealing the penetrations between the attic and the living space.
I probably talk about air sealing too much.
Then again, maybe not.
Because we continue to see how much of a difference it makes from house to house.
Reducing air movement between the attic and the living areas helps limit dust, odor, and unwanted attic air from finding its way into the rooms where people spend their time.
Same idea. Different house.
And in this case, it was an important part of helping Erica’s family feel comfortable in their home again.
When we wrapped up the project, the attic was clean, disinfected, sealed, and ready for a fresh start.
More importantly, the family no longer had to worry about what was sitting above their ceiling every day.
