Spray Foam Insulation for a Home Addition

We made it just before the drywall crew showed up.

Last week we were at a house in Northern Illinois where the homeowner was adding a new front entryway. Nothing huge. Just enough to give the front of the house a whole different look.

When we pulled up, there were ladders leaning against the garage, scraps of lumber in the driveway, and somebody had already dropped off the drywall. That’s usually when I start looking at the schedule a little closer.

We had enough time to get the spray foam insulation in before the walls disappeared.

I thought we’d be done pretty fast.

Honestly, I figured this would be one of those quick morning jobs.

Walk in. Spray the walls. Clean up. Head to the next one.

Then the homeowner asked if we’d take one more look around before we started.

She said, “I only want to do this once.”

Fair enough.

We walked the addition again and found one section where the framing tied into the original house. Easy spot to overlook if you’re moving too fast. Once drywall goes over it…well…you’re probably not thinking about insulation anymore.

It smelled like fresh lumber in there.

The whole addition still had that fresh wood smell.

One of our guys joked that we were probably breathing more sawdust than air that morning. He wasn’t wrong.

Everything was still wide open, which is exactly when spray foam insulation makes the most sense. We were able to get every wall sealed before another trade came behind us. No cutting drywall later. No trying to figure out how to get insulation into a finished wall.

Just…done.

We’ve been seeing more projects like this.

Maybe it’s just the time of year, but it feels like we’ve been doing quite a few additions lately around Crystal Lake and Huntley.

Some are entire additions.

Some are mudrooms.

Some are entryways like this one.

They’re all a little different, but they usually have one thing in common. There’s a short window before drywall shows up, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

That’s the part people don’t always think about until later.

Glad we caught this one when we did.

By the time we loaded the trailer, the drywall crew was already getting things ready.

Perfect timing.

Nothing dramatic happened on this job, and honestly, that’s usually a good sign. The homeowner got the spray foam insulation she wanted, the addition was ready for the next step, and everybody stayed on schedule.
