Attic Insulation After Raccoons in McHenry, IL

The Raccoons Were Gone. This McHenry Attic Still Needed to Be Finished.

The raccoons had already been dealt with.

The attic was another story.

Our customer, Debbie, had discovered raccoons in the attic of her McHenry, IL 60050 home. Part of the old insulation had already been removed after the problem was found, but there was still quite a bit left up there.

After everything that had happened, she didn’t want to leave the attic half done.

She wanted the rest of the old insulation out and new insulation put back in.

So that’s what we came in to do.

We Started by Emptying the Attic

Our crew at Koala Insulation of Northern Illinois removed everything that was left.

The remaining old insulation came out along with the debris that was still in the attic.

Once we had everything cleared away, we could see the attic floor again.

That’s also when we did the air sealing.

There are always little gaps and openings that are hard to get to when they’re buried underneath insulation. Since we already had the attic empty, this was the time to get in there and seal what we could before covering everything back up.

We didn’t want to remove all that insulation and miss the opportunity.

Then we could finally start putting the attic back together.

We Went Back With Blown-In Cellulose

For Debbie’s attic, we installed blown-in cellulose.

We like cellulose for homes that have dealt with pest problems in the past because it’s treated with borates. Borates can help deter certain pests.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can blow in cellulose and forget about a raccoon problem. The animals need to be removed first and wherever they’re getting into the house needs to be addressed.

Debbie had already taken care of that part.

Our job was dealing with what was left behind and getting her attic insulated again.

And It Was Hot Up There

This was not a cool, comfortable attic job.

It was hot and muggy.

The kind of day where being in an attic isn’t much fun at all.

But the crew got through the removal, handled the air sealing and installed the new cellulose.

Debbie actually brought that up in the review she left us afterward.

She said, “The crew was great and I appreciate all they did as it was quite hot and muggy. I would gladly recommend them.”

We appreciate her saying that because our guys definitely earned it on this one.

Now the Raccoon Mess Is Behind Her

This job wasn’t about getting the raccoons out. That had already been handled.

It was about everything that came afterward.

Debbie still had old insulation sitting in the attic after the partial removal. She wanted the rest of it gone, the attic cleaned up and new insulation installed so she could finally put the whole thing behind her.

That’s what we did.

The remaining insulation came out. We cleaned up the attic, air sealed while everything was exposed and then installed fresh blown-in cellulose.

Now it’s finished.

If you’ve had raccoons, squirrels or other pests get into your attic, getting the animals out may only be the first part of cleaning up what happened up there.
