Spring Home Improvement Checklist

Temperatures here in North Texas are warming up and flowers and trees are starting to bud, sure signs that spring has arrived! While nicer weather may have you spending more time outdoors, early spring is also a great time for homeowners from Hurst to Haslet to take care of important home improvement and maintenance projects. Summer heat arrives quickly in North Texas and now is the time to prepare your home and yard for the sweltering days ahead. Have you checked these spring home improvement projects off your to-do list yet?

1. Attic insulation/ventilation assessment: Now is the time to go into your attic and inspect your insulation and ventilation to make sure everything is in good condition and working properly. Homeowners should perform their own visual inspection a few times a year, looking for signs of displacement and damage from water or pests. We also recommend calling in a professional insulation company such as Koala Insulation of Greater Fort Worth at least every few years, or after any roof damage, to do a more thorough inspection of your insulation and ventilation.  

2. HVAC system check-up: Spring is also the best time to have your air conditioner units inspected and cleaned by a licensed HVAC company. Don’t forget to change your filters! Regular maintenance is the best way to keep your units in good shape, minimizing your risk of them giving out in the middle of July when it’s 100 degrees outside!

3. Gutter Cleaning: Now is a great time to clean out old leaves and twigs clogging up your gutters in preparation for the torrential rains and storms that roll through our area every spring. 

4. Fire Extinguishers/Smoke Alarms: It’s a good idea to change the batteries in your smoke alarms when it’s time for clocks to “spring forward” and then again when they “fall back.” Now is also a good time to make sure your fire extinguishers are easily accessible and in good working order, and to review your fire safety plan with your family. 

5. Yard/Landscaping Maintenance: Last but not least, now is the time to get your yard ready for summer! Stop weeds in their tracks by applying pre-emergent and check that your in-ground sprinkler system is working properly. Prepare your garden beds for planting by cleaning up leftover fall leaves and adding fresh mulch.
