Key Areas to Check for Insulation

Most homeowners know that properly-installed insulation is critical for keeping your home comfortable and energy efficient, but many people think of insulation as something that is installed when a house is first built and then never think about it again. However, insulation will degrade over time, so it’s a good idea to have your insulation inspected every few years. Keep reading to learn which parts of your home require insulation and should be inspected regularly:

The Attic

Most of us don’t spend a lot of time in our attics, so we may not notice if old insulation is falling down or has been displaced by contractors. If your attic insulation is damaged or insufficient you will notice that conditioned living space connected to the attic is hotter and more humid in the summer and colder and drafty in the winter. You may also notice that pests are entering your home through your attic or see damage to possessions stored in the attic due to the extreme hot and cold temperatures.

The Garage

If your garage is attached to your home, has finished living space above or adjacent to it, or you use it for things other than storing vehicles, such as woodworking or as an exercise area, you are going to notice if your garage lacks sufficient insulation. Upgrading the insulation in your garage can significantly improve the comfort level of adjoining areas of your home while reducing your heating and cooling costs.

Crawl Spaces/Basements

Most North Texas homes are built on slab foundations and don’t have basements, but many houses built prior to 1960 utilize pier and beam foundations, creating a crawl space under the first floor of the house. If your crawl space is improperly insulated, your floors may feel cold in the winter and you may have moisture issues in the summer. Other signs of a poorly-insulated crawl space are wood rot and pest infestation.

Walls

Many older homes don’t have any insulation in their walls. If you have exterior rooms that feel super hot in the summer or drafty in the winter, poorly-insulated walls may be the culprit. When we come to your house to perform an insulation assessment, we are able to check the walls for insulation using thermal imaging, and provide you with suitable insulation options such as dense-packed cellulose.
