Fall Checklist for Protecting Your Home This Winter

After a summer of record-breaking heat for the Fort Worth area, the kids are back in school, and we can look forward to more pleasant fall weather in the weeks ahead. As we move into the cooler months, now is a great time to assess your home’s insulation needs. 

This year the Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting a wet and potentially snowy winter for North Texas. "Wetter-than-usual weather is coming to the southern portions of the Deep South, Texas, and California, with potentially drought-quenching rain." We need precipitation after a long summer of record-breaking temperatures, but we all know ice can wreak havoc in our homes and on our roads.

One thing you can do to prepare for cold weather before it arrives is to make sure your attic is properly insulated. From traditional fiberglass batting to spray foam, there are various options for keeping your home warmer in the winter (and cooler in the summer). Scott Dalton of Koala Insulation of Greater Ft Worth also recommends taking the following steps to protect your home this winter:

1. Test your furnace to make sure it is operating properly BEFORE you need it. Now is a great time to schedule fall maintenance on your HVAC system.
2. Examine any water pipes in your attic that are above the insulation and make sure they are wrapped in insulated material.
3. Use a measuring tape to check that your current insulation meets the current building code standard minimum thickness of 13 inches.
4. Check for areas that may be lacking proper insulation coverage. Sometimes rodents or workers accessing your attic space displace insulation and may leave some spots unprotected.
