Before This St. Charles Attic Could Become a Bedroom, It Needed Insulation

This was a fun one because the homeowner had a pretty clear plan for the space.

They have a 95-year-old Cape Cod home in St. Charles, and the attic space was being finished into a bedroom.

But before you start worrying about drywall, flooring and everything else that makes an attic look like a bedroom, you’ve got to make sure somebody can actually be comfortable sleeping up there.

That meant insulation came first.

A 95-Year-Old House Comes With a Few Surprises

John went out to look at the project and measure everything.

This wasn’t a newer home with straightforward framing everywhere you looked. The house has balloon-style construction, and there were a couple of what the homeowner called “oddball areas.”

That’s a pretty good description.

Old houses have them.

You open things up and find framing or spaces that aren’t anything like what you’d see in a house built today.

The homeowner had some specific concerns about those areas, so we talked through them before the work started.

John also went over the insulation options and what made the most sense for turning this attic into livable space.

The Homeowner Wanted to Know Exactly What He Was Paying For

Another thing that mattered on this project was the estimate.

When it’s your house and you’ve spent time figuring out all its quirks, you don’t want a contractor coming in and ignoring what you just told them.

Now the Remodel Can Keep Moving

The insulation portion is done, which means this attic can move on to the next stage of becoming an actual bedroom.

And we got a pretty great review out of the job too.
