My Insulation Got Wet... Now What?

Between chilling frosts and rainy days, your insulation is always at risk of getting wet if you aren’t careful. And depending on the type, wet insulation is just about as useless as no insulation.

If you’re wondering, “does the moisture in my attic count?” we’re afraid it does. But don’t be too down in the dumps — just because your insulation got wet, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still hope. An incident like this is an excellent opportunity to ditch the soggy stuff and replace it with upgraded insulation!

How Did This Happen?

There are a few ways your insulation can get waterlogged, but roof leaks are the leading cause of wet insulation. Roof leaks can go completely undetected for years and wreak havoc right under your nose. If you ever have the thought, “is that moisture in my attic?” you’ll want to call someone right away to help you find the source.

Insulation can also get wet through other cracks in your exterior, such as damaged windows or doors. Plumbing leaks or basement flooding are other common problems that can lead to wet insulation.

However it happened, there isn’t much to be done on your own now. Call an expert for help, and they can assist you in diagnosing the issue and installing insulation upgrades.

What Can I Do Now?

Depending on the kind of insulation you’re using, you’ll have a few options. Some insulations won’t be affected by the moisture at all, while others could grow mold and possibly damage your home’s infrastructure over time.

Your best bet is to contact installation professionals to properly assess the damage and help you find a way forward. Still, there are some ways you can help prevent monstrous moisture from damaging your precious installation ever again:

Install New Insulation

If your home has certain insulations, such as cellulose insulation, and you’re dealing with an extensive leak, chances are you’ll need a total replacement of the damaged insulation.

But the good news is that this is a fantastic time to invest in new insulation for your home. The new installation comes with many benefits, from lower utility bills to a cozier home. So even though wet insulation might seem like a headache now, it could end up being a net positive for your life.

Keep It Dry

Once you’ve had your new insulation installed, you’ll want to do everything in your power to keep it nice and dry. We recommend that you have your roof frequently inspected for any leaks to prevent the whole “is that moisture in my attic?” problem from repeating itself!

You should also inspect siding for any holes and ensure that your foundation and basement are sealed as well.

Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Keep in mind that your insulation can also be waterproofed. So if you’re working on a new home project and you need insulation installed, it’s recommended that you contact a professional about waterproofing services.
