Top Areas to Insulate in Your Home

April 4, 2022

Believe it or not, 90% of homes are UNDER insulated in the United States.  If you experience uneven temperatures, high energy bills, seasonal allergies indoors, drafts, or noise traveling between rooms, your home is likely one of them.

Where you insulate is important.

Ideally, every home would be properly insulated and sealed from the foundation up to the roof for optimal energy efficiency and comfort.  It is possible, but costly, to insulate and air seal a home enough to become an ENERGY STAR Certified home.  These homes are quite rare due to the diminishing Return on Investment (ROI) after a certain point in making the home energy efficient.  For the average American home, it is best to focus efforts in the areas that will return the biggest bang for their buck. Those areas are:

ATTIC

Attic insulation is the most effective insulation, yet it is also the area where insulation is most lacking or improperly installed.  If you poke your head in your attic and see less than 12” of loose insulation, gaps without insulation, or any batts of insulation (looks like blankets of insulation), you can be sure that an insulation upgrade is in store.

BASEMENT

Basements are known to be cold and damp. Sound familiar?  Insulating the walls and rim joists (band joists) of your basement will not only improve the quality of your basement but will improve the temperature regulation of your entire home.

CRAWLSPACE

Crawlspaces can be a major source of heat transfer and moisture related issues.  Sealing and insulating this area will help regulate the temperatures of the home's main floor.  To take it a step further, you can encapsulate the entire crawlspace which is the process of completely sealing the space off and installing a de-humidifier to combat moisture.

How you insulate is important.

It is not only important THAT you insulate, it’s also important HOW you insulate.  DIY insulation is one of the most common projects done wrong.

For starters, it can be dangerous.  Falling through the ceiling is no way to spend your Sunday afternoon.  Additionally, improper PPE can be hazardous to your health depending on the type of material you have chosen.

Secondly, you may inadvertently damage your home.  Aside from busting your drywall, installing insulation incorrectly could lead to moisture and mold.

Lastly, not having the expertise to choose the correct insulation type and the equipment to install it correctly can lead to starting all over again.  Different types of insulation are best for different applications, and the science of buildings can be complex.  Without the best equipment, installation can take more time and cost more money than it needs to.  Purchasing insulation and renting equipment from a big box store often times costs more money and takes more time than hiring a professional.
