What is the Longest-Lasting Insulation?

We've met many people in Northwest Houston and learned that one thing is true. Only insulation nerds want to think about insulation.

Everyone else wants to get this insulation stuff dealt with as quickly as possible. Then, they don't want to think about it ever again if they can avoid doing so.

So, naturally, they often want us to tell them which insulation lasts the longest.

Spray Foam Insulation

In terms of pure longevity, spray foam insulation is the winner. It can last 80 to 100 years, so you can have us come in, update the insulation in your home, and be done. By the time anyone has to worry about insulation again, the house will likely be in other hands.

It also features the highest R-value per inch and can make its way into every nook, cranny, and corner in your attic and between your walls.

So why doesn't every homeowner just choose spray foam? Because the up-front costs are higher.

Batt Insulation

Batt insulation is a good, cost-effective, long-lasting alternative. As long as it isn't damaged, batt insulation can last up to 80 years. It can still last for 20 years or more if it gets damaged.

Giving your home a high, cozy R-value with batt insulation is also more than possible.

Before choosing Batt insulation, you should consider your home's susceptibility to critter-guests. Raccoons, rats, squirrels, and other attic pests are happy to dig into and nest in it.

Fiberglass insulation can be a good option over mineral wool or denim since it is a form of glass and does exact its own costs on any animals who might want to dig around in it. It also doesn't feed mold or mildew and is naturally non-combustible.

All Insulation Needs Maintenance

In fact, under ideal conditions, almost all insulation materials can last up to a century. The problem is that homes rarely offer ideal conditions.

Most people will need to replace their insulation every 25 years, and even those who opt for spray foam might want to have it checked every quarter-century or so.

It's also important to check for roof leaks, as leaks are another common source of insulation damage. Air leaks can be just as damaging as water leaks, creating grimy, dirty conditions that diminish your insulation's effectiveness.
