Understanding the Different Types of Insulation Materials

You know you need to update your home insulation but don't know which type you want to purchase? Don't worry, you're not alone. Most people don't spend much time thinking about a home system they hardly ever see.

While we're happy to make recommendations when we visit your home, it doesn't hurt to have at least a little familiarity with the different types of insulation and their advantages and disadvantages.

Blown-In Insulation

Blown-in insulation is made out of loose-fill fiberglass or cellulose. We literally install it by blowing it in with a special machine.

Blown-in insulation is perfect for strangely-shaped attics and homes needing wall insulation. That's because it can fit into almost any nook and cranny in the home and the walls. It's also highly eco-friendly and is one of the least expensive forms of insulation.

It's unsuitable for many Houston homes because it tends to retain much moisture. If you are already struggling to control moisture in your home, we'd typically recommend a different form of insulation.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is sprayed in, forming a big, puffy substance that fills every nook, cranny, and crevice. It's a highly cost-effective way to improve the R-value of your home. If your biggest concerns are lowering your energy bills and keeping your home comfortable even during the hottest days of the year, then spray foam insulation is a great choice.

It isn't the cheapest choice, but it does pay for itself in 2 to 4 years. We'll be happy to show you a cost breakdown so you can decide whether the cost is worth it!

Batt Insulation

Batt insulation, or blanket insulation, is a pre-cut insulating material that is used between wall studs, attic rafters, and ceiling joists. There are three types: fiberglass (the pink stuff), mineral wool, and denim cotton.

Batt insulation doesn't give you as much insulation as the other types, but it is cost-effective, popular, and resistant to moisture damage.
