How Much Insulation Does Your New Construction Home Need?

Here in Northwest Houston, many people choose to buy land and build their own dream homes rather than trying to buy a pre-owned home. Insulation thus becomes part of the construction process, leading to questions about where insulation should go and how much of it is required.

Here's everything you need to know if you're considering a new build.

Exterior Walls Are Optional

Insulating the exterior walls is something that's done in colder climates. Here in Houston, you'd generally just apply sealants to waterproof the exterior walls and then leave it at that.

However, there are benefits to insulating your walls. If you want the most comfortable and energy-efficient home you can get, walls are worth considering.

Attics Are Not Optional

Every home needs attic insulation. Heat rises, and thus, attic insulation is the best way to make your home as energy-efficient as possible.

Without attic insulation, your AC will struggle to do its job, and your house will be uncomfortable all year long. In addition, your house may become prone to mold and mildew since condensation may start forming on your framing.

We recommend 14 to 15 inches of insulation in the attic.

Garages May Be Insulated

If you intend to use your garage as a storage area, workspace, or carport, then you don't need insulation.

But if you intend to create a garage apartment, party space, or office, you'll want insulation to ensure it doesn't become a sweatbox during the summer months.

Crawl Spaces May Be Insulated

If you have a pier-and-beam foundation like many Houston homeowners, then your home will have a crawl space. Most people don't think about insulating this area, but adding spray foam insulation can help protect your floors from moisture.

It can also help keep uncarpeted floors from being frigid during the colder months, making getting up in the morning a more pleasant experience.
