There are many different kinds of insulation on the market and many different ways to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It can sometimes be overwhelming when it comes time to make a decision about what material to go with.

Thankfully, Koala Insulation of North Houston has the answer! We are professionally trained to help each of our customers choose the perfect insulation for their space and their home’s needs. Not all insulation is right for every space, so we break down a few of the different benefits of each of our materials below to help get you started.

Blown-in Insulation 101

Blown-in insulation is one of our materials that comes in a couple of different materials. It can be made out of fiberglass, cellulose or mineral wool and is a loose fill material.

It is installed by blowing this loose material through our long tubes directly into place. Blown-in insulation is a great choice for larger projects because it is budget-friendly and can cover a large area in a short amount of time.

Depending on its use, fiberglass blown-in insulation can be a bit irritating to the skin because it is made out of recycled glass. However, it is naturally fire- and moisture-resistant and will last for decades in the right environment.

Batt Insulation

Batt insulation is also made out of fiberglass, but this type of insulation comes in sheets instead of small pieces. The glass is melted down, spun into long fibers and then woven into those sheets that you can probably picture in your mind. Batt insulation is most popular between walls as it is really efficient at controlling energy transfer and doesn’t settle over time.

It can work under floors, in ceilings and between wall studs, but it can be a bit trickier to manipulate at times because it comes in those pre-formed sheets. That can make it harder to work around piping, ductwork or wiring in spaces like your attic or basement.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is the other kind of insulation that comes in different forms. Two chemicals called isocyanate and polyol resin are combined and sprayed out of our hoses.

Depending on the formulation, it is either considered open-cell or closed-cell. Closed-cell spray foam is incredibly durable and lasts for decades. It is naturally water-repellent and fire-resistant and is so strong that it can actually support your house. This also makes it a bit more expensive to install. It works great in attic spaces and other damp areas like crawl spaces.

Open-cell spray foam is more flexible and will expand and contract with the seasons. It is great at noise reduction and reducing energy loss, but it is more susceptible to moisture issues. In either case, spray foam is incredibly reliable and will keep you cozy no matter what is going on outside.
