Give Your HVAC System a Break | Koala Insulation of Jacksonville

Summer means your HVAC system will be in more frequent use, working hard to keep your home and family cool and comfortable. But with increased HVAC usage comes higher energy costs, as well as greater strain and wear on the various parts of the cooling system, which increases the risk of a breakdown. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to give your HVAC unit a break this summer. From attic insulation to changing air filters, here are a few suggestions.

How to Lighten the Strain on Your Air Conditioner This Summer

1. Inspect Your Attic Insulation

With the hot summer sun beating down your roof, the attic is a natural space for heat to accumulate. But proper attic insulation minimizes the transfer of heat and keeps the attic—and, ultimately, the rest of the home—more temperate and comfortable, which results in less reliance on the AC. Do a brief inspection of the insulation in your attic to determine its quality and condition. If the space is suffocatingly hot, has evidence of moisture or mold growth, or you can feel outdoor air getting in, it may be time to consider new attic insulation.

2. Cool Your Home Naturally

By taking measures to keep indoor air naturally cooler, you won't need to run the AC as often. Keep windows and blinds closed during the day; minimize use of the stove, oven, dryer, and other heat-generating appliances; and open windows in the early morning and evening to let in cooler outdoor air. Your AC will appreciate the reprieve.

3. Change the HVAC Filter

The HVAC filter traps dirt, dust, and other fine particles so they aren't recirculated back into the air of your home. A filter can clog very easily, especially in the humid air of summer, and this forces the AC to work harder to push air through. Locate the filter near the main air handler and replace it with a fresh one every month or so. Your AC performance will improve, and you'll be easing the burden on the system.
