Does My Insulation Need To Be Removed?/ Koala Insulation of West FL
Do I need to Remove my Insulation?
When you notice damage to your insulation, or it doesn't seem to be working correctly, your first thought might be that it's time to remove it. The good news is that in our experience, a complete re-insulation of your home is unnecessary in 80% of cases. These are some extreme circumstances where you should consider removal/replacement.
Rodent Infestation
No one likes the idea of rodents in their house, and sometimes insulation can provide just the cozy, quiet environment that the little critters are looking to nest in. If you see evidence of these unwanted visitors in your insulation, such as droppings or nests, it's probably a good time to consider removal. Some insulation contractors may try to convince you that you must remove all the insulation within 40 feet of this discovery. However, you can save money by letting us deal with the problem area precisely.
Water Damage
Between bad storms and faulty plumbing, there are plenty of ways to find unwanted water. Insulation damaged by water won't work properly and will become an environment conducive to mold and other problems. First, ensure the water source is corrected, then look to replace the affected insulation as soon as possible.
Mold
Everyone knows the musty smell can become the defining feature of your home. Having mold in the insulation can be a real problem for your home, and you should address it immediately. Not only does it bring its distinct aroma, but breathing air filled with mold spores can damage your health, especially for people with preexisting respiratory illnesses. Mold on insulation will typically look black and sprawling. However, not every black marking on your insulation is necessarily molded, as exposure to airflow can also cause this discoloration. If you're not sure, it's best to have a professional take a look.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite is a mineral formerly used in insulation. Insulation of this type is likely to contain differing amounts of Asbestos, a substance commonly known to cause lung cancer from direct exposure. While it is not common, we have seen it a few times in older homes. If you believe you have Vermiculite Insulation, leave it alone. Contact an Insulation Professional who can have it tested for Asbestos and who can safely perform its removal.
Settled Insulation
Insulation that's getting older often tends to settle. When this happens, the insulation is still doing its job, just not as well. It may be an excellent time to have it professionally redone. However, another option that can save you money is adding new insulation on top rather than removing it all. This method will be less expensive and equally beneficial for your home.
A well-insulated home is so important, and we want to ensure your home stays well insulated. You may need to remove/replace some of your insulation for several reasons. You don't have to figure out your insulation issues on your own. At Koala Insulation of West Florida, we're here to help you diagnose and solve any insulation problems you may have.
