Koala Insulation can save you 30 percent on energy bills in Corning NY

Koala Insulation Can Save You 30% on Energy Bills

Save up to 30% on energy bills? That’s a bold claim. It means if you receive a bill for $300, Koala can help knock almost $100 off that bill. Yes, it really is a bold claim. And, yes, it’s true. The great thing about that claim is that the savings never stops – month after month, year after year, you continue to save.

How is this possible?

Follow the Money

Many people go to extreme measures to conserve energy, such as:

  • Rushing through showers to save on hot water
  • Turning off the lights when leaving a room
  • Drying clothes on a line instead of using a gas or electric dryer
  • Unscrewing one or more light bulbs in a fixture
  • Converting to fluorescent or LED lights

There’s nothing wrong with any of these actions. But perhaps the people who take these measures haven’t studied the energy problem in depth.

In order to understand how you can save money, you need to know where your money is going when you pay that high energy bill. Heating in the winter and cooling in the summer are the monsters in the room. According to the Department of Energy, these two activities account for between 50% and 70% of all energy used in the average home. About 20% of energy goes to heating water, and only 10% to 30% goes to all other energy sources in the home.

So, while those money-saving efforts listed above may help a little, people who follow them are actually “majoring on the minors.” Wouldn’t it make more sense to go after the “low hanging fruit” and address the problem with heating and cooling that makes up the lion’s share of the energy bill?

 Another Big Number

Quality insulation that has been correctly selected for a specific building, and that has been professionally installed, can reduce the work a heating or cooling system performs by 60%. That’s a big number, but there were a lot of qualifications in that statement.

It takes quality material to do the job right – not just haphazardly blowing a little extra insulation into the attic. The correct type of insulation must be selected, and often it takes multiple types of insulation to do the job right. And, finally, it’s going to take a professional with proper training and years of experience to max out the savings.

Is this a DIY project? Probably not. Even if you tackled the job yourself – or part of the job yourself – it’s not likely you’d get close to helping your heating and cooling system by 60%. Most homeowners don’t have the tools or expertise to even examine all of the insulation in their home, much less tackle the project of an insulation upgrade. And to really achieve the big savings, it takes the knowledge of a professional who knows where to look for every last bit of energy savings. Even someone who claims “I know how to install insulation” may not have the training and experience that a true professional brings to the table. Want the most savings? Talk with an experienced pro.

Wait – Why Not Save 60%?

Is somebody pulling a fast one here? If insulation can save 60% of the work a system does in heating and cooling a home, then why is Koala only claiming up to a 30% savings?

No one’s trying to “pull a fast one.” The answer boils down to some simple math. Remember that heating and cooling a home uses between 50% and 70% of a home’s energy bill. Let’s be conservative and say that 50% of energy usage in your home goes to heating and cooling. That’s the number insulation is targeting – it’s not going to help with how much energy it takes to light your home or dry your clothes. So, if insulation can reduce the heating and cooling part of your bill – the 50% - by 60%, then we multiply the 50% by 60% like this: 0.50 * 0.60 = 0.30, which is 30%. That’s the overall savings that insulation can reduce your energy bill.

And, of course, we need to insert the standard disclaimer that “your mileage may vary.” In other words, you could see more or less than the advertised 30% savings. Again, every home is different and there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to insulation, so there is no magic number that says an insulation upgrade will reduce your bill by exactly 30%. The number is an average, but it’s a legitimate average. Whatever the exact percentage for your particular home, upgrading your insulation can make a big difference in your monthly bill.

How Much Will I Save?

Ah, a tricky question. An exact answer is elusive, but an insulation professional with years of experience can examine your home, your heating and cooling system, and your energy bill to give you an idea of what you might expect.

There are so many factors that affect this equation, and insulation is just one of them. For example, if your heating and cooling systems are old or have not been properly maintained, even a seasoned insulation professional won’t be able to determine how much of a problem they are contributing to your energy bill, and it will be difficult to nail down exactly how much upgraded insulation will help those old systems.

But an insulation expert will have a good feel for what you might expect. And, after thorough examination of every aspect of the condition of your home, that expert can give you an idea of how much bad insulation is contributing to your energy bill problem.

If you’d like to play with some numbers, you can use the do some calculations based on the information at this link to see how much money you might save if you better insulate your home.

How Can Insulation Save Money?

So, what are the specifics of insulation achieving that 30% savings? It’s not a simple answer. Insulation is used in the attic, under the floors, in the walls, around windows and doors, in the basement or crawl space, and anywhere pipes or wiring enter the home. There is batt insulation, blown-in insulation, foam insulation, and more. Your home is a virtual cornucopia of places that insulation can be used (and improved).

An insulation expert knows all the places to look at your current insulation, and can uncover potential problems in places you may never have thought of. All these places add up – when properly insulated – to that 30% overall savings.
