My Wife and I aren't Sleeping Together | Koala Insulation Columbus, OH

After 23 years of wonderful marriage, it has come to this. If you're married I'm sure you can relate. Sometimes the pressure of life drives a wedge between you, other times it is money or kids or work. For yet others, it's snoring. In fairness, we each snore a bit. Ok, fine, it's mostly me and I snore a lot. Yet, by the grace of God, we've managed to soldier on through all of those things and more. That's why it has been so shocking to come across the one thing that has finally come between my beautiful wife and I. This one, insidious, silent killer of blissful wedded sleep... insulation.

If you didn't see that one coming in a blog on an insulation website, I can't help you. Well, I can with insulation, but not with the other stuff.

Our house was built in the mid-2000s by a reputable builder that didn't cut corners. Even so, 15+ years later, here we are with a house that is nearly 10 degrees hotter on the second floor than the first and often 15+ degrees different from the basement in the summer. The culprit? Our attic insulation! That's right, you would be amazed at how quickly some insulation can compress and lose it's R-Value.

When we started this business, I crawled up in my attic and was surprised to see rafters sticking up above the insulation (bad), areas where insulation had been dug away for project and not replaced (really bad), and overall compression of the insulation to merely a few inches (terrible). As a result, my HVAC system is working overtime to compensate, which is also shortening the lifespan of that system. It's a vicious cycle that results in poor energy efficiency and increased gas and electric bills. The technical term for all that it "sucky".

You're probably starting to see why we aren't sleeping together. I don't know about you, but. I can't sleep when I'm hot. If it were up to me, I'd sleep in a cave with three industrial air conditioning units blowing on me all night long. It would be like an evil sleep lair for middle-aged dads. There I go again, getting all fantastical (it'll happen one day, I just have to believe). So, when the heat sets in, I pick up my pillow in the middle of the night and make the trek to the basement where it's a blissful 65 degrees.

Even as I shuffle my way to my serene sleep utopia, I still have to sort out a comfortable place to lay down, which requires sheets and a blanket because I'm not in college any more and can't just sleep on a bare mattress. I'm not a heathen. By that time, I'm wide awake. Now I'm hot, spending too much money on air conditioning and wide awake at 2am. All bad things. Meanwhile, my stunning wife is upstairs tucked in under covers and blankets, likely thrilled that I'm no longer keeping her awake with my tossing and turning and snoring and sweating (all things I didn't put in the brochure when she met me). And no, I can't explain how she can bury herself under the covers when it's that hot - that could be a hwolle blog post on it's own.

You may be asking yourself why I haven't fixed this little problem of mine yet. If you suddenly stop asking yourself and start asking me, I'm going to accuse you of suddenly being Mrs. Koala Insulation of Central Ohio.
