How Insulation Can Help Reduce Noise Levels in Your Workspace

Working remotely has become the new normal over the past year and a half. While many employees have enjoyed working from home, it’s not without some challenges. Ambient noise can make it difficult to concentrate—and no one wants a barking dog interrupting an important business meeting!

Insulation is a great way to reduce noise levels in your environment, and Koala Insulation of Spokane is here to help. Read on to learn more.

How to Measure the Effectiveness of Soundproofing

Insulated walls not only reduce heat transfer between rooms, they also decrease the amount of noise that passes through, too. The Sound Transmission Class (STC) scale measures how effectively sound waves pass through certain materials. The higher the STC rating, the more soundproof your home or office will be.

With an STC rating of 25, you can easily hear conversations happening outside of the room. An STC rating of 50, on the other hand, is considerably more soundproof. Average home insulation between two walls of drywall typically has an STC rating of 40–50.

Additional Benefits of Insulation

Insulation is heavily regulated by building codes, which means it’s considerably safer than most marketed soundproofing products such as foam paneling. And while simply reducing noise levels will have a positive effect on your workday, using insulation will help improve energy efficiency in your home or office. No more chilly offices or expensive heating/cooling bills!

Best Types of Insulation for Soundproofing

Both spray foam insulation and fiberglass batts are excellent options when it comes to reducing noise. Fiberglass batting is cost-effective, easy to install, and has an STC rating somewhere between 40–50. One drawback to fiberglass is that you need to be able to access the space between your walls, so it’s best installed during new builds or renovations. Fiberglass batts are not airtight, so they do still allow a minimal amount of noise to travel through.

Spray foam insulation, on the other hand, is excellent for both new and existing builds. Since spray foam fills every nook and cranny, it is considerably more airtight than fiberglass batts, bringing the STC rating up to 50. Spray foam insulation is also a great choice to reduce echo and noise transfer in offices with open-concept ceilings.

Other Soundproofing Techniques to Consider

Insulation is a great first step towards soundproofing your home or office, but it’s not the only trick in the book! Sound waves bounce off of hard surfaces, so look for ways to add more soft textures to your space. A sofa or area rug will not only boost the look of your space but will also absorb some of the excess sounds.
