Why Is It Important to Have Attic Ventilation?
Why Is It Important to Have Attic Ventilation?
While it may seem counterintuitive, having a way for warm air to escape out of your home in the winter is crucial to maintaining its warmth without the added moisture. As we crank up our furnaces against the bitter chill of winter, we introduce heat and moisture into the air.
As it rises up into our attics, if there is nowhere for that excess heat and moisture to go, it can linger and cause a whole host of troubles for you. Having a properly vented attic and attic fans is a great way to reduce this problem!
How Can I Tell if My Attic Isn’t Properly Vented?
With a little investigation, you can typically figure out on your own whether your attic has a proper ventilation system. If you don’t see any attic vents on the roof or under your eaves, you certainly need some!
You should also head up the stairs or through your hatch to visually inspect your attic. If you see frost or damp areas along your beams, you need to address it right away.
An improperly insulated and under-ventilated attic can also cause ice dams to form on your roof. An attic that is too warm will melt the snow on your roof, but as the water flows down to the edge of your roof, it will encounter that uninsulated edge and will refreeze. Over time, ice can grow on top of itself and can even push under your shingles and into your attic.
Is Moisture Bad for My Attic?
Yes! If your attic is too airtight and has no place for the excess moist air or water to escape, it will build up over time. That alone can cause water damage along the structural components of your home and it can even lead to mold growth.
Since our attics aren’t used as often as the rest of our homes, the mold could grow into an infestation before it is discovered.
If these issues are not addressed, they can lead to further damage if the moisture leaks down your walls and makes its way into the living area of your home. You may end up with water damage behind your drywall, warped walls or a musty odor wherever the mold growth traveled to.
How Can I Keep My Attic Dry?
Leave it to us! We can provide your attic with the best insulation materials to ensure your attic stays dry and at a comfortable temperature all season. We can install added insulation and air seal around any windows or attic hatches to keep out moisture or unwanted drafts.
In addition, we can install a solar attic fan that can help keep air moving throughout your attic. Using the power of the sun, the fan helps circulate air so the hot, moist air moves up and out of your venting system. Whatever your attic needs when it comes to insulation, we have you covered.
All attics require proper insulation! Contact us today at Koala Insulation of Central Connecticut to get started.
