Shocking Things Seen in Dallas and Plano Attics, Part 2

Continuing from the post above, many shocking things our crews commonly find in Dallas, Plano Richardson and Park Cities attics include:

Gaps and hots spots in the attic: Even homes with a few layers of attic insulation are often victims of workers –electricians, plumbers, HVAC service technicians, cable TV providers and home theater installers – who have no regard for insulation. These service technicians often find that insulation is in their way and they move it aside without replacing it when their job is done. The results are gaps or "hot spots" in the ceiling where there is no resistance to heat transfer, lowering the overall comfort and efficiency of your home.

Air conditioning to nowhere: Our team has answered many calls from homeowners that report one room that is particularly hot despite their HVAC system running constantly. In a surprising number of homes, we find one or more air conditioning ducts that are open to the attic – pumping conditioned air (and your hard-earned dollars) into the attic for no apparent reason. This is caused, unfortunately, by HVAC workers who don’t properly secure ducts to vents, enabling future workers and repairmen who may later be in the attic to easily and accidentally bump ducts loose.  Usually with a little bit of patience, time, screwdrivers and duct tape, our crews can secure vents that air conditioning attic spaces.

Access leakage: Even if your north Dallas attic is insulated, you are likely leaking conditioned air through the attic hatch and pull-down stairway that has nothing but a piece of plywood separating living areas from hot or cold attics. Since you cannot install insulation over the stairway cover, your attic access is a weak point in your defenses against the elements.
