Shocking Things Seen in Dallas and Plano Attics, Part 1

The Koala Insulation of Dallas team is in and out of attics daily in Park Cities, North Dallas, Preston Hollow, Richardson and Plano. Our crew never ceases to be amazed by the common problems we see on a regular basis. In order of frequency, here is what we find:

Close to no insulation in older homes. It is shocking to find that people have lived in the same home for decades, weathering the extremes of North Texas temperatures with no insulation or nearly no insulation. After all, insulation was a building code requirement only for the past 40 to 50 years, so finding homes with no insulation is not difficult, but when one considers the cost of air conditioning homes that are not insulated, or barely insulated, for decades, it is staggering.

No ventilation. Your attic needs ventilation. Vents in the roof, soffits and gables are critical for letting air warmed by the sun on your dark shingles to escape. If you enter your Park Cities or Plano home’s attic and are blasted by a wall of heat, chances are good that the lack of ventilation is trapping the hot air inside, causing your air conditioner to work harder than it should, while reducing the life of your roof as your shingles are baking from both the top and the underside. Unfortunately, many builders cut corners, providing minimal or inadequate venting. For your Richardson or Preston Hollow home to be comfortable and efficient, adding vents and one or more attic fans to your roof is critical to comfort and systems efficiency.
