Five Signs Your Home is Under-Insulated

Most homeowners don’t think about insulation because it is hidden in the attic and walls, but it is a critical component in keeping your home at a comfortable indoor temperature all year long. Unfortunately, many North Texas homes are under-insulated, especially those built prior to 2015, the year they changed building codes to require an insulation level of R-38. What are some signs your house is under-insulated?

  1. Big temperature changes from room to room: A properly insulated home will have reasonably consistent temperatures from room to room. If you notice certain rooms are always significantly hotter in the summer or colder in the winter, it’s a strong indication that your insulation is not up to par.
  2. Unusually high energy bills: If your home lacks sufficient insulation, your HVAC system will work harder to try to maintain the set thermostat temperature. If your AC or furnace is running constantly, your energy bills are going to be significantly higher than your neighbor whose home is properly insulated.
  3. Frozen pipes: If you regularly experience frozen pipes on exterior walls during cold spells, this is a glaring sign that your walls aren’t sufficiently insulated. Failing to remedy this will put your home at risk of burst pipes and costly water damage during the winter months.
  4. Pest issues: Small animals and insects can easily get into your home through small openings in your attic, as well as through poorly sealed doors and windows. If you have pests in your attic, it could mean your attic insulation is insufficient or damaged.
  5. Your home is noisy: In addition to helping regulate temperatures inside your home, insulation also provides a sound barrier. If your home has poorly-insulated floors, ceilings, and walls, you will be able to hear your family members’ conversations and footsteps in the rooms next door or above you. You may even hear cars driving down the street or your neighbors talking in their yard.
