Replacing an Overlooked Garage Attic Wall in Red Bank

This job took us to a home in Red Bank where we were working on the wall between the garage attic and the living space.

From a distance, it looked like the wall was insulated already. It had fiberglass batts in every cavity.

Once we got closer, we could see something that caught our attention right away.

The Fiberglass Had Changed Color

The fiberglass wasn’t the bright color you normally expect to see.
It had dark streaks running through most of the wall.

We’ve seen that before. It usually means air has been moving through the insulation for a long time. The insulation catches dust as the air passes through it, and over the years those darker areas become easier to spot.

The homeowner hadn’t noticed it because the insulation had been hidden inside the garage attic.
After looking everything over, we pulled the old fiberglass out so we could start over.

Swapping Fiberglass for Spray Foam

Once the wall was empty, we rolled our equipment into place and started spraying closed-cell foam.
We worked across the wall a section at a time instead of trying to rush through it.

Spray.
Move.
Check the cavity.
Then onto the next one.

Before long, the fiberglass wall was gone, and every cavity had been filled with closed-cell spray foam.
It was a completely different wall than the one we started with that morning.

One Wall Can Make a Difference

Most people think about insulating the main attic.
Garage attic walls don’t usually get much attention.

They’re out of sight, so they tend to stay that way until someone is already working in the area.
This one had probably looked the same for years.

The dark marks in the fiberglass didn’t happen in a month or two. They had built up over time as air worked its way through the insulation.

Now that fiberglass is gone.
The wall has closed-cell spray foam from one end to the other.

Wrapping Up the Day

Once the spray foam was finished, we checked the wall one last time before cleaning up.
The old fiberglass was loaded up.

Our equipment went back on the truck.

The homeowner now has a garage attic wall with closed-cell spray foam where old fiberglass used to be.
It isn’t the kind of project that changes how a house looks from the street.

Once everything is closed back up, nobody will know the work was done.
That’s fine with us.

We know it’s there, and so does the homeowner.
