Closed-Cell Spray Foam for a One-of-a-Kind Addition
Most of the attics we work in are pretty similar. This one wasn’t.
The addition was built in the shape of an octagon with exposed beams and a cathedral ceiling. Before we unloaded any equipment, we spent a few minutes just looking at how everything came together because there were roof lines going in every direction.
It was obvious pretty quickly that this wasn’t a fiberglass job.
Every Bay Was Different
Once we started setting up, you could really see how much framing there was. No two sections looked exactly the same. There were short bays, long bays, tight corners and a lot of places that would’ve been frustrating trying to cut fiberglass into.
Ready to start your insulation project?
Spray foam doesn’t really care about any of that.
We sprayed directly against the roof deck and worked our way around the entire addition until every cavity was covered. By the end, all those odd transitions that looked complicated at the beginning were sealed up.
Building the Roof Instead of the Attic
This homeowner wanted the roofline insulated instead of leaving an attic above the ceiling.
That’s the direction we went.
Everything is now sprayed along the roof deck, turning that whole space into conditioned space instead of leaving outside temperatures sitting right above the ceiling. On a cathedral ceiling like this, that’s usually the best way to do it.
Closed-cell spray foam also gives plenty of R-value without taking up much room, which matters when the rafters aren’t very deep.
A Fun One to Finish
We work on plenty of houses that all start looking alike after a while. Once the foam was finished, this addition was buttoned up and ready for the next phase of construction. It was a fun project to work on, and one that’s going to perform a whole lot better than it would have with traditional insulation.
