They Felt the Difference in This Red Bank Home Right Away
This Red Bank homeowner came to us because the house just wasn’t as comfortable or energy efficient as they wanted it to be.
The attic needed some work.
There was older insulation that wasn’t doing the job anymore, and the ventilation needed attention too. So instead of just blowing more insulation over what was already there, we started over.
Ready to start your insulation project?
And there was quite a bit to do on this one.
First, Everything Came Out
Our crew at Koala Insulation of Central Jersey removed the existing insulation along with the debris in the attic.
Once an attic is empty, you can see a lot more of what’s actually going on up there.
We cleared the soffits and installed around 160 ventilation baffles. That’s a lot of baffles, but this attic needed them to keep air moving properly from the soffits.
We also added blocking around the attic access and between the garage attic and lower attic.
Anywhere flashing was needed around flues and heat-producing areas, we handled that too.
There was even a microwave oven duct that needed some attention. We reconnected it and insulated it before moving on.
Then Came About 16 Inches of Cellulose
Once all that prep work was finished, we could actually insulate.
We installed approximately 16 inches of blown-in cellulose, bringing the attic to about R-49.
We also installed attic rulers throughout the space. Those make it easy to see and verify the depth of the insulation instead of guessing what’s underneath all that cellulose.
The attic hatch got some attention too. We weather-stripped and insulated it because there’s no sense putting 16 inches of insulation across an attic and then leaving the access point as an easy place for air to move through.
The Lower Attic Needed Something Different
This house also had a lower attic area.
Instead of using the same approach everywhere, we removed the existing insulation there and installed approximately 2½ inches of closed-cell spray foam, giving that area roughly an R-18 insulation value.
That’s one of the things we run into on real houses. Not every section of an attic is built the same way, and sometimes using one insulation product everywhere doesn’t make much sense.
So, this Red Bank job ended up with blown cellulose in one area and closed-cell spray foam in another.
The Homeowner Noticed It Right Away
The best part came after we were finished.
The homeowner told us:
“We noticed an immediate improvement in the temperature and energy usage in our home.”
That’s exactly what you hope to hear after a project like this.
They also mentioned Jerry helping them understand what the home needed and Gene walking them through the rebate process.
There were a lot of pieces to this job. Removal. Ventilation. Baffles. Blocking. Ductwork. Air sealing. Cellulose. Spray foam. Even the attic hatch.
But sometimes that’s what it takes.
This wasn’t about throwing more insulation on top and calling it done. We worked through the attic one issue at a time and left the homeowner with a noticeable difference inside the house.
If your Red Bank home has an attic that hasn’t been updated in years, it may be worth seeing what’s actually going on up there.
