This Bloomingdale Attic Had Layers From Decades of Owners

We were out in Bloomingdale, GA recently working on a house that had insulation from what felt like every decade stacked on top of each other.

Honestly, we see this a lot around older Savannah-area homes.

One owner adds a little more insulation. Then another owner adds something different years later. Then somebody tosses more on top without fixing airflow or sealing anything first. After a while, the attic starts looking like a patchwork project instead of an actual insulation system.

And this attic was HOT.

The attic heat was the real problem

The homeowners mainly wanted to lower the attic temperatures because the house was struggling during the hotter parts of the day.

Nothing crazy at first.

But once we got up there, you could feel how trapped the heat was. The air barely moved. Even standing near the attic opening felt warmer than it should’ve. Kind of like opening an oven for a second and getting hit with that wave of heat in your face.

That’s usually how it goes when older insulation starts breaking down and the attic can’t regulate temperature correctly anymore.

We swapped everything over to open cell foam

After looking through everything, the best move ended up being converting the attic over to open cell spray foam.

And honestly, this is one of those upgrades homeowners notice pretty quickly afterward.

Open cell foam creates a much more complete air seal compared to older loose-fill materials that have shifted around for years. Instead of layers settling unevenly and allowing heat intrusion everywhere, the foam seals and insulates at the same time.

That part mattered.

Especially in southeast Georgia where heat and humidity work together nonstop for most of the year.

The attic already felt different before we finished

Partway through the install, you could already tell the attic environment was changing.

Less stale.

Less heavy.

The crews worked steadily through the day and the homeowners kept checking in because they were honestly surprised how much cleaner and quieter everything was than they expected. Spray foam jobs sometimes make people nervous beforehand because they imagine a huge chaotic process, but this one went really smoothly.

The loudest thing most of the day was probably the trailer ramp outside.

Older insulation isn’t always helping anymore

One thing people don’t always realize is older insulation can stop performing well long before it completely “fails.”

It compresses. Shifts around. Collects dust and moisture over the years. Sometimes we pull back insulation and find older materials from multiple renovations underneath each other. Different colors, different textures, different ages. Kind of like layers of paint on an old wall.

Not great.

And when attic temperatures keep climbing, the HVAC system ends up fighting an uphill battle all summer long.

The homeowner reaction honestly said it all

After we wrapped up, the homeowners were excited enough that they immediately mentioned sharing our information with friends and family, which honestly means a lot to our crews.

They left us this review afterward:

“We love our new insulated attic!! Christy and her team, led by Isaac, did a great job. They were on time, clean, and professional. I can’t wait to share their contact information with friends and family.”

That’s the kind of feedback that tells us the homeowners genuinely felt the difference, not just saw it on paper.

Sometimes the best fix is starting fresh

This wasn’t really a situation where adding “a little more insulation” was going to solve the problem. The attic needed a full reset so the home could actually control heat the way it was supposed to.

Now the attic is sealed, temperatures will stay much more manageable, and the insulation system is finally working together instead of fighting against decades of old materials layered everywhere.
