The Insulation Had to Come Out Before This Manalapan Attic Could Be Fixed

Central Jersey > Blog > The Insulation Had to Come Out Before This Manalapan Attic Could Be Fixed

This Manalapan homeowner knew the attic needed work.

The insulation up there had become contaminated, and simply adding more on top wasn’t what they wanted. The attic needed to be cleaned out first. Then we could deal with the insulation, sealing and ventilation.

So that’s where our crew at Koala Insulation of Central Jersey started.

Everything old came out.

First, We Vacuumed Out the Attic

There was quite a bit to remove from this one.

We used our industrial vacuum system to pull out the old insulation along with the contaminated debris that had collected in the attic. It’s a much cleaner way for us to remove loose material, and it gave us access to areas that had been buried underneath the insulation.

Once we had it cleared out, we cleaned and disinfected the attic and used an attic-safe deodorizer.

Now we actually had a clean space to work with.

And that’s when we could start putting everything back together.

This Attic Needed More Than New Insulation

Before covering everything back up, there were a few things we wanted to address.

We installed ventilation baffles to keep the soffits clear. Once the new insulation went in, we didn’t want it pushed into those areas and blocking the airflow.

We also took care of the attic stair opening.

Attic stairs can be a pretty big opening between the house and attic if they aren’t sealed and insulated well, so that became part of the job instead of leaving it as-is.

There were also flues and other heat-producing areas up there. Those got the necessary protection before we moved on to the insulation.

Not the parts of the job you really notice when everything is finished, but they’re important.

R-49 Fiberglass in the Main Attic

For the main attic space, we installed new R-49 fiberglass batt insulation.

There was also a smaller storage area near the attic stairs that was being used differently than the rest of the attic. We installed R-21 insulation there and then put the existing plywood back down.

The homeowner didn’t lose the storage area just because we were improving the insulation.

By the time we finished, the attic looked a whole lot different from when we first got there. The contaminated material was gone. The space had been cleaned and deodorized. New insulation was in place, the soffits had room to breathe, and the attic stairs were sealed and insulated.

They Noticed the Difference Right Away

The homeowner told us they noticed an improvement as soon as the project was finished.

That’s always good to hear.

This wasn’t just an insulation top-off. We basically had to work our way through the attic from the bottom up. Get the bad material out, clean everything, deal with the areas that needed sealing and ventilation, and then install the new fiberglass.

Sometimes that’s what an attic needs.
