Contacted Koala insulation of Newark for an estimate. Ed came out for an estimate of our insulation needs. He walked through our home with my husband and I. He asked a few very technical questions that I don’t believe basic homeowners would know. Like “are your rim joists insulated?” I advised him that I wasn’t sure what he was talking about. His responses to our basic questions were condescending and what my husband and I both felt like we were being “mansplained” about many questions. While I understand that this is the world he lives in and understands, it was clearly not terminology we understood. The estimate was odd and I walked away several times to give myself a break from his presence. The partner he brought with him was the opposite and very kind but I can’t recall the partners name. We very clearly presented to Ed that we would like our estimate to be broken down so we could select which items we wanted to tackle. We also shared with him that we would be having our bathroom above replaced and would likely do this part of the job separate to avoid and issues with the spray foam being ripped out.
We received the estimate a week later. Although, we weren’t happy with Ed’s demeanor we did feel comfortable with what he was proposing to do. The estimate came as an electronic estimate that only allowed me to select the entire 5k job or decline. I contacted Ed and stated the pieces we were agreeing to complete. Approximately $1000 worth of work. I got a response stating he would send a new estimate with only the items we wanted to take on at this moment. When the new estimate arrived we noticed the estimate was 15% higher than the last quote. I inquired why this was. I was advised that Ed had added a “trip fee.” He claims this fee was bundled in to the other job we didn’t choose to do. Sounds shady, right? So I text him and shared that we did not find it fair to be charged $150 more when this charge was never technically in the first estimate. His response “I understand.” I advised that we were prepared to move forward with the job without the trip fee. About a day later I received a text stating that he couldn’t have added the trip fee to the other estimate. Although everything else in the first estimate was broken down line by line…even the 1 inch foam board and plastic they needed to use. So he absolutely could’ve included that fee…if it was actually being charged in the first estimate. He then sent me a picture of a $995 bottle of spray foam with the text that said “here’s an ad for the product.” Never once did I tell this man that I planned to do the job on my own because we have zero plans to do it on our own. Nor did I ask for the product.
For a company with 5 star reviews, I expected significantly better. Ed was not only condescending throughout but the text he sent was just flat out rude. In addition, my home location is 25 minutes from Newark. Why are they charging $150 to travel to a house? It was 18 miles door to door. Do they charge everyone a $150 fee or did Ed just want to inflate the cost of the job? Either way, I don’t spend my money on businesses who practice like this or who hire employees like Ed.

We hired this company to do air sealing and insulation in our home, using a mixture of spray foam and fiberglass in different spaces. I was impressed with the reduction in air loss they were able to get. They exceeded their own estimates even; I am always pleasantly surprised when a company over-delivers, although we may have also just gotten lucky. I found this company very easy to work with: they communicated clearly and gave us a sense of the relative pros and cons of different options, and what would be most cost-effective. Although I was mainly motivated to hire these guys to save money on my heating bill, I also noticed an immediate improvement in comfort after doing their work. The house was less drafty, the basement became particularly warmer, and this in turn made the first floor's floor warmer which made it much more comfortable.
